— Yard sale / Swap meet —

By our recollection, it's been over two years since we have had a yard sale / swap meet. During that time, many changes have occurred, in both the Macintosh world and in the TMUG community. We're now in a new location, in a new county. The Macintosh is now on a new processor & Apple has a huge hit called the iPhone that is causing massive changes in cellular markets, mobile computing applications, and businesses. What hasn't changed is that Mac users, by and large, tend to upgrade their computers every few years, get tired of one gadget and start using another, or otherwise outgrow / stop using some of their Mac-related "stuff."

Throughout the year, this "stuff" tends to pile up on desks and shelves, in boxes and drawers, collecting dust and becoming a little more obsolete. But now, be it hardware or software, accessory or peripheral, it's become something important for our August meeting. It's all YARD SALE FODDER!

Yes, ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, Mac users of all ages, it's time to drag the dusty detritus of your Mac existence out into the light of day, polish it up, and bring it in to trade or sell. With the large number of folks we usually have at a meeting, that is sure to bring out something interesting, useful, and perhaps profitable for everyone.

OK, here's how it works, for those who haven't been to a TMUG yard sale before. We will have a place set up where the items will be displayed — first come, first to get a table. This will be in the far end of the Gathering Place, where we met in July. (As you enter the doors to the building, it's to your right, back by the drink machines.) You can stake out some space, but let's remember to share. If you have three items of software, they don't each need a table. And if you've got a lot of something, put one out, with the rest under the table in a box. (Apply common sense and that sense of fair play your mother always said you had, & you'll do fine.)

We'll start with our regular meeting routine – welcome, introductions, recognition of visitors, first-time attendees, and Macintosh Professionals, announcements, etc. Charles Mangin will return to moderate the Q&A session. (Whether you have a question or an answer, everyone is invited to add to the discussion. Charles will help find answers to your questions.) When we go to the break, the selling & swapping will begin.

One word of advice before we get to the details: bring small bills or checks. There is a tendency among geeks to never have any bill smaller than a five, and to use a debit or credit card for everything - more so now than in the past. Since no one at the yard sale will be able to accept plastic, you'd better have cash in appropriate denominations or checks. 'Nuff said?

There are not a lot of rules:

  1. No fist-fights or name calling. Quiet threats are also frowned on, but harder to police.
  2. No guarantees - Buyer Beware.
  3. TMUG has no interest, control, or method of employing such guarantee. (see rule 2).
  4. If it doesn't sell, you, the bringer-onto-the-premises, are responsible for removal from said premises. Failure to do so will bring about the ire of the XCom. You don't want to see this. It is not pretty.
  5. All boxes, packaging material, cut cable ties, and other trash must be put into a trash container.
  6. Terms are whatever is agreed upon between buyer and seller - barter, begging for donations, coin of the realm, whatever. TMUG doesn't want to know if indentured servitude is involved. (see rules 3 & 2).
  7. Selling is for TMUG members in good standing only. For non-members, there is a $35 table rental fee, which also includes a "free" one-year TMUG membership and 2 entries in our iMac giveaway.
  8. Have fun!

Some of the junque & goodies that you may see at the meeting has been listed on the swap-meet / yard-sale page. Members are welcome to add the items you are bringing to the list on this page by using the edit function of the TMUG-wiki. (But don't mess with what other members have posted!)

As usual, there will be several door prize drawings for TMUG members throughout the meeting. The meeting will begin at 6:30 pm on August 11 at the Hope Community Church in Raleigh. Remember, TMUG is the undisputed leading Mac User Group in the Triangle... & beyond! See you there!

TMUG meetings are free and open to the public. To learn more about TMUG, please go to about TMUG.

(Attendance at the August meeting was 37, including 4 visitors & 1 new member.)
