— December 2007 Holiday Party - Leopard Demo - More... Much More! —
Monday, December 10, 6:30 pm, North Carolina Mutual Life in downtown Durham
TMUG is planning a very big ending for 2007, after all it was a big year. Our December meeting is our annual holiday party. We will meet in the NCML café instead of the auditorium. There will be great food and drinks. Plenty of time to mix and mingle - get to know your fellow TMUGers. We'll follow this with the holiday edition of Questions and Answers. (just like regular Q and A but during the Decemeber meeting :-D )
Our presentation this month will be Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. Apple System Engineer and TMUG member Francis Shepherd will show us the newest features in the newest incarnation of OS X.
But, wait, there's more...
– December Super Raffle –
We have a great raffle to end the year, with not one, but two great prizes
Thanks to our friend Norm at Best Buy - New Hope Commons, we have an Apple Airport Extreme base station as a prize in the raffle.Very Cool – and...
We also decided that because Leopard is the program topic, and Time Machine is one of the terrific new features, that we would also raffle an external hard drive, a 750 Gb Firewire 800 / Firewire 400 / USB 2.0 / eSATA external hard drive. This drive is from OWC and we are sure it will add value to any Mac system.Raffle tickets will be $5 each or 5 for $20. We will draw two winners from the same pool of tickets. First winner will have a choice of prizes. Buy as many tickets as you want, but, the same person may not win both prizes. This raffle will be held at the December meeting regardless of the number of tickets sold. TMUG Raffles are open to all, regardless of membership.
But, wait... there's still more...
– iLife' 08 and Leopard –
Would you like a free copy? TMUG has a copy of each to hand out in exchange for a written review. This offer is for TMUG members only. All persons interested in either iLife '08 or Leopard please come to the meeting and put your name in the hat. We'll draw names for each piece of software.
As if that wasn't enough...
– Terrific Door Prizes –
TMUG members will have a number of door prize opportunities at the holiday party, including iTunes gift cards.
Don't miss out, plan to attend TMUG's December Holiday Meeting.
We'll be glad you did!
November 12, 2007
— Branford Marsalis returns to TMUG —
World-renowned saxophonist, three-time Grammy winner and Mac user, Branford Marsalis will return to TMUG for our program November 12. An instrumentalist, composer, and head of Marsalis Music, he produces both his own projects and those of the jazz world’s most promising new and established artists from his base in the Triangle. Originally from New Orleans, Marsalis has been extremely active in relief efforts following Hurricane Katrina and he is the honorary chair of the New Orleans Habitat for Humanity effort to rebuild the city. The program format will be similar to his visit to TMUG several years ago when Branford took questions from the group on a wide range of topics related to his music, composing on a Mac, the music business and more. Since then iTunes has come onto the scene and hopefully Branford will discuss its effects on his and other artists' music sales. A few likely subjects for discussion are other methods of music distribution, digital rights management, plus whatever else we want to ask about. So bring your questions.
If you're a music fan, you won't want to miss this meeting!
Also on the program, Bob Chandler will host our monthly Q&A session. We'll also give away a couple of iTunes gift cards as door prizes which members can use to purchase Branford Marsalis' music, such as his new Braggtown album. Plus we'll discuss plans for the December Festivus program.
All TMUG meetings are open to the public - members get to experience the pride of belonging, and also can win one of 2 or 3 door prizes. Whether you are new to the Mac or a long time user, TMUG meetings have something for you and your Mac. The meeting will start at 6:30 pm.
(Attendance at the November meeting was approx 70 members and visitors.)
October 8, 2007
The October TMUG meeting was held on Monday, Oct 8. Attendance at the October meeting was approx 33 members and N visitors.
September 10, 2007
The September TMUG meeting was held on Monday, Sep 10. The program took us back to the NCML auditorium for two more traditional programs. Melanie Crain started by showing us "Music Fun on the Internet: A Place for the Amateur and the Serious Musician". Bob Chandler handled his traditional Q&A, and then Stefan Jeglinski presented the main program, a discussion of "kernel panics," covering the following points: what they are, why they might happen, and most importantly, strategies to try to make them go away. If you've ever suffered from these, this program (link above) is archived for reference. (Attendance at the September meeting was approx 42 members and visitors.)
August 13, 2007
The August TMUG meeting was held on Monday, Aug 13. Following Bob Chandler's Q&A we broke up into small groups to discuss and ask questions about topics of interest. Two requests from members included a discussion on security topics, in particular home routers, and another group talked about setting up and using Macs as servers. We also re-raffled the Apple TV using the original raffle tickets. Guess who won: Stefan Jeglinski, a random ticket chosen by none other than Cort Boylan, who had returned the Apple TV for re-raffling. Weird? You decide... (Attendance at the August meeting was approx 33 members and 5 visitors.)
July 9, 2007
The July TMUG meeting was held on Monday, July 9. Bob Chandler returned for Q&A. Francis Shepherd of Apple was on hand to talk about the iPhone launch and shared several anecdotes about his trip to Virginia to get one. He also demonstrated many of its features and talked about his general experiences with the iPhone. TMUG members Duane Reaugh and Smythe Richbourg were present with their iPhones, so we even got to witness the device performing its primary function! We held the raffle for the Apple TV - congratulations to the winner - Cort Boylan. (Attendance at the July meeting was approx 36 members and 10 visitors.)
June 11, 2007
The June TMUG meeting was held on Monday, June 11. Stefan Jeglinski again substituted for Bob Chandler with Q&A. TMUG members Jeff Cole, Jim Flaherty, Dick Schenck, and Alec Whittaker reviewed and presented a variety of interesting pointers about digital photography and processing the resulting images for better results. We were unable to complete the raffle for the Apple TV, so it is being held over until the July meeting. Raffle tickets will be $10 a piece, or two for $15. (Attendance at the June meeting was approx 33.)
May 14, 2007
The May TMUG meeting was on Monday, May 14th. Stefan Jeglinski substituted for Bob Chandler with Q&A, and then proceeded to demo a couple of the programs from the infamous MacZot Friday the 13th sale, Dockstar, a cute one-trick pony that modifies Mail's dock icon to show how much mail is waiting in different mailboxes, and Bookdog, a bookmarks organizer and synchronization program. Allen Emory gave the main program on RapidWeaver, the easy-to-use webpage design tool, and clearly the best deal of the MacZot sale. NCML debuted what was apparently a brand new wireless system, which was reliable but a bit slow. (Attendance at the May meeting was approx 35.)
April 9, 2007
The April TMUG meeting was on Monday, Apr 9th. Bob Chandler started things off with Q&A, and Duane gave us a great presentation on the AppleTV, along with the flat screen Allen brought. Joe Cohn managed to successfully demo Google Earth, despite having to get an internet link through his cell phone. Yes, xcom is considering our options with respect to the problematic wireless connection at NCML. FWIW Chuck Watts of NCML offered an official apology for the repeated wireless problems. (Attendance at the Apr meeting was approx 35.)
March 12, 2007
The March TMUG meeting was on Monday the 12th. it was our first meeting format that was "free-form." We broke up into freely associating groups to talk about whatever was of interest in that group. Response was favorable, and there were a number of new faces in attendance. We hope to have 2-3 meetings per year like this. (Attendance at the Mar meeting was approx 45.)
